My Story

There is nothing like being at death's door to open your eyes and see how important it is to have your health. For many years I had suffered from allergies. It wasn’t until my symptoms were worsened by minor paralysis in my throat after an emergency tracheotomy that I started seriously looking for relief through natural means. No more toxic prescription drugs! Several years ago I had an emergency tracheotomy. It was 2am after a Superbowl Sunday in January, 1990 and I couldn't talk and could barely breath due to complications from having my wisdom teeth pulled. I had to write a note to my husband to let him know I had just regurgitated through my nose (I promise, that's as gross as this story gets) ... at that point I knew I needed help. My husband packed our two young children into the car and we drove to Boulder Community Hospital in one of Boulder, Colorado's horrible wind storms. The doctors told my husband if we had waited 30 more minutes I would not be here and as I was being wheeled into the surgical area I was told I may never smile again (something to do with the nerves that were near the area where they would be making the incision). Yikes ... I couldn't speak but I wanted to say "please be careful"! I laid on the table and felt them draw lines with a marker as to where they would cut and then felt them insert a needle into my neck .... 30 seconds later I was out.

When I woke up I had a long recovery ahead of me and felt good knowing I made it AND would be able to smile! One glitch though ... it left me with a partially paralyzed epiglottis. This paralysis in my throat would cause me to gag and cough very easily. It's caused embarrassment at times but I always think ... this is better than the alternative. My family has been so supportive by telling me it's okay even though everyone in the restaurant we had chosen for the evening was looking at me in disgust because I was coughing loudly in their personal space. Trust me, when you're a cougher everyone's personal space becomes much larger than the normal 3' x 3'.

Since my allergy symptoms of sneezing, coughing, itching, and swelling had gone from annoying to life threatening I decided to have a full test done to find out exactly what I'm allergic to. Good news ... I now know what I need to stay away from. Bad news .... EVERYTHING! The results of my allergy tests showed I would suffer 9 months out of the year if I didn't have animals. Being the animal lover I am ... this means I have symptoms year round. The drainage caused by these allergies significantly increased my coughing and gagging.
